Walking is safe, enjoyable and natural. There are other work out methods that burn more calories quicker than walking however <strong>walking can be surprisingly effective</strong> and very low key.</p>
<p>Let’s think about how effective walking can be and how you can use walking to get fit and healthy. Walking is safe and low stress on the body and can be accomplished almost anywhere. It is easy to get started and many individuals use walking as a warm up. Walking can get you in the mood to work out once the blood starts to flow it is much easier to transition to a full work out.</p>
<p>If you have physical limitations walking generally provides you with a way to get your body moving and the blood flowing, of course this depends on the level of your physically limitations.</p>
<p><strong>Walking for fitness and weight loss can be a powerful highly effective fitness methods.</strong> You are able to adjust your walking intensity level on the fly.</p>
<p>Let’s take a look at how easy it is to increase the intensity level of walking:</p>
<ul>
<li> Longer strides</li>
<li>Carry weights wrist or ankle weight</li>
<li>Wear a weight vest</li>
<li>Cover the same distance in less time</li>
<li>Walk hills</li>
<li>Walk stairs</li>
<li>Walk sideways</li>
<li>Walk backwards</li>
</ul>
<p>These are just a few ways to increase your intensity level of your walking for fitness and weight loss program.</p>
<p>Here is a method that I have shared with many people to get them started with their personal walking program.</p>
<ul>
<li>Pick out a route (about 2 miles or 8 laps around a school track)</li>
<li>Decide how many times a week you want to walk. 3 times a week is a good starting point.</li>
<li>Chart your walks, times and distances.</li>
</ul>
<p>Charting your walks give you a different prospective and allows you to see patterns and make little adjustments. Charting also gives you a method that livens up your walking, use it to create little goals and games that push you on to higher levels of fitness.</p>
<p><strong>Decide what you want to get out of your walking. Write it down! </strong></p>
<p>Is walking going to be your main fitness method?<br />
Will you use walking as a stepping stone to move on to higher levels of fitness?</p>
<p><strong>Create a walking journal (it can be a simple spiral notebook) and use it.</strong></p>
<p>Many of the people I have shared this getting started with walking routine with have moved on to higher levels of fitness using this as a getting started point for a fitness program. Some were just stuck and needed a little push and some needed to gradually get to a fitness level that they could make even greater changes for their fitness and health.</p>
<p><strong>What a great low stress and low impact way to get started exercising</strong> and use walking as a weight loss and fitness program has been one of my personal favorite methods to get people started and to the nest level of fitness.</p>
<p>Of course there are plenty of ways to get fit this is just one that has helped many people get active and involved with out putting too much stress on them.</p>
<p>Walking for fitness and weight loss is a great choice when deciding which program or method you will use.</p>

<p>Cardio <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">exercise</a> is such a strange thing. In theory, it should work so perfectly well for all men and women, but as anyone who has tried it knows, the practicality of it just doesn&#8217;t add up.</p>
<p>After all, some men and women do cardio 6 hours, 9 hours, or more per week, and still have belly fat to burn. On the other hand, it works just fine for others.</p>
<p>British researchers wanted to get more insight into this paradox, and studied 35 overweight men and women, who weren&#8217;t previously exercising.</p>
<p>(Reference: International Journal of Obesity 32: 177-184, 2008).</p>
<p>Subjects exercised 5 times per week for 12 weeks. That&#8217;s a lot of <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">exercise</a>, but it helped the subjects lose an average of 8.2 pounds, which is great &#8211; I was positively surprised by the results.</p>
<p>So cardio will work for some people, however, in my experience, it works best in young men, who need the help the least!<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>Back to the study, the variance in <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/keytofatloss">Fat loss</a> between individuals was huge. Check this out&#8230;</p>
<p>The best subject lost a staggering 32.3 pounds in 12 weeks, while the worst subject actually GAINED 3.74 pounds.</p>
<p>The scientists think they know where things went sour. They classified the subjects into 2 groups, called the &#8220;Compensators&#8221; and the &#8220;Non-compensators&#8221;.</p>
<p>The Compensators were hungrier, and as a result consumed an extra 268 calories per day, all but wiping out their cardio efforts.</p>
<p>Therefore, the Compensators lost the least amount of weight, and scientists believe that was due to the huge &#8220;compensatory&#8221; increase in appetite experienced by this group.</p>
<p>Does your appetite increase when you do slow cardio? If it does, research shows it will ruin your cardio efforts.</p>
<p>So if your cardio program is not working for you, check your appetite and calorie intake to see if you are &#8220;compensating&#8221; for your efforts. If you are, you might be better off using a program<br />
of high-intensity resistance and interval <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">training</a> (i.e. Turbulence <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">training</a>) for your weight loss efforts.</p>
<p>As Australian Professor Steve Boucher has shown in research, interval <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">training</a> increases hormones called catecholamine. And increased level of catecholamine can reduce appetite, among other fat-burning benefits.</p>
<p>In the real world, few people lose 33 pounds after 12 weeks of cardio. Heck, few even achieve an average weight loss of 8 pounds with aerobic <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">exercise</a>.</p>
<p>So again, check your appetite, and consider giving high-intensity <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">exercise</a> a go for your next workout program.</p>

I nailed most of the predictions I made about aerobics classes, yoga, core <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">training</a>, &#8220;holistic&#8221; approaches, online personal <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">training</a> technology, the baby boomer market, increasing obesity and many other subjects.</p>
<p>I do confess, it wasn&#8217;t that difficult, because instead of just guessing, I actually did some research on industry statistics and I also had some &#8220;inside insights&#8221; because I&#8217;d been a health club manager for so many years and was privy to fitness business trends.</p>
<p>This year, instead of making predictions for the whole fitness industry, what if I could take out my crystal ball again and predict with 99% precision exactly what kind of results you will achieve with your body by the end of the year?</p>
<p>Well, no problem, I can do that too!</p>
<p>I would claim that I have some kind of &#8220;gift&#8221; for this, but to be honest, you and I don&#8217;t need to be psychic to make predictions like these.</p>
<p>There are two things you can always count on:</p>
<blockquote><p>(1) Nature&#8217;s laws of cause and effect, and</p>
<p>(2) human nature.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>On that basis, here are my 20 fitness predictions for the New Year:</strong></p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you can reach into your pocket on any day this year and pull out a card or piece of paper with all your body and fitness goals written on it in vivid detail, the odds are 95 to 1 in favor of you achieving every one of those goals before the year is out.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you focus your thoughts on your goals and how you are going to achieve them, all day long, you will reach your goals so fast this year, it will make your head spin.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you focus your thoughts on health woes and body fat problems and if you think about what you don&#8217;t want, all day long, your problems will get worse than ever this year.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you made a new year&#8217;s resolution, but you didn&#8217;t turn it into a specific, written goal with a deadline and a strong reason why you must achieve it, you will freely abandon it the moment the going gets tough.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you can tell me all the reasons why achieving your health and fitness goals are important to you, you will be motivated from within to stick with it when the going gets tough.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that at times, the going is going to get tough.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you can tell me today what is your life purpose and what is your lifelong vision for your body and your health, you will still be as motivated and driven at the end of the year as you were at the beginning.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you don&#8217;t have long term goals and a &#8220;big picture&#8221; vision for your life that you will lose your New Year&#8217;s enthusiasm and motivation in a matter of months or even weeks.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that the way you see yourself in your mind&#8217;s eye today will be an exact reflection of what you see in the mirror at the end of the year.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you have a setback that seems to get in the way of you reaching your health and fitness goals and you tell yourself &#8220;this just is temporary; this too shall pass,&#8221; then it will pass and it won&#8217;t set you back.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you believe the way your body looks today is out of your control and you feel helpless or powerless to change, you won&#8217;t even make much of an effort this year.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you accept complete responsibility for the way your body looks today and you believe that you have the power to change, that you will take action and keep taking action, even through the tough times.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you&#8217;re unhappy with your physical condition and you say, &#8220;it&#8217;s not my fault&#8221; or you blame it on genetics, hormones or age, then your body will look pretty much the same at the end of this year as it did on New Year&#8217;s day.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that the more you have patience, a long term perspective and the ability to postpone immediate gratification, the more likely you are to be a success one year from now.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that the more you seek &#8220;miracle pills&#8221; or &#8220;quick fixes,&#8221; the more likely you are to be a failure one year from now.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that you will be tempted by many quick fixes this year.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you hang out with losers and negative people this year, you will become just like them.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you hang out with winners and positive people this year, you will become just like them.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that you will run into more negative people and losers this year than positive people and winners.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you recruit just one friend or support partner that stands behind you and the lifestyle changes you want to make this year, you will double your chances for success. If you surround yourself with numerous support partners, you will become virtually unstoppable.</p>
<p>So how does your future look for the year ahead?</p>
<p>Based on my &#8220;predictions,&#8221; if it doesn&#8217;t look as bright as you&#8217;d like it to be, then don&#8217;t worry, because a prediction is not predestination.</p>
<p>You can&#8217;t do anything to change the past, but by changing your thoughts, attitudes and actions in the present moment, the future is yours to create.</p>

<p>I was at a big event last week and was reminded how important it is to have strategies for this season of high-calorie parties and busy schedules. But I get ticked off by the tired old<br />
suggestions you find on the Internet or in magazines like Woman&#8217;s World.</p>
<p>Often the suggestions are lack any substance, because the writers don&#8217;t want to imply you actually have to make a sacrifice to succeed. They make <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/keytofatloss">Fat loss</a> sound easy, as if all you had to do was park at the far end of the parking lot and you&#8217;d burn all the calories from 5 shortbread cookies.</p>
<p>Well it doesn&#8217;t work that way&#8230;So here are my politically incorrect, unique Turbulence <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">training</a> strategies to help you keep off the holiday pounds.</p>

<p><strong>Strategy #1 &#8211; Green Tea &amp; Almonds</strong></p>
<p>One of the most common tips you&#8217;ll hear is to &#8220;fill up&#8221; before you go to a party where there will be lots of goodies.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, most people I talk to have no luck with this tip. Most people still go to a party and eat everything in sight.</p>
<p>But recently TT users have told me that having a cup of Green Tea and one ounce of almonds has helped them avoid holiday cravings better than anything ever before.</p>
<p>The fiber from the almonds reduces appetite while the small amount of caffeine from the Green Tea seems to increase mental alertness and keep you &#8220;energized&#8221; at the party.</p>
<p>Hopefully that might work for you&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>Strategy #2 &#8211; Don&#8217;t waste your time on any fancy cardio programs</strong></p>
<p>Listen, the bottom line over the holiday season is that your success depends almost entirely on your <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/superfoods">nutrition</a>.</p>
<p>You can&#8217;t expect to hit the cardio confessional and burn off last night&#8217;s 2000 calorie smorgasboard. That&#8217;s a 4-hour workout. Instead, don&#8217;t get into that situation in the first place.</p>

<li>- Focus on portion control (and if you have no discipline, forget even trying to eat just one)</li>
<li>- Nix all drinks mixed with calorie-containing beverages, or better yet, just stop getting drunk. Period.</li>
<li>- Write down everything you eat to identify your problem spots. Then do whatever you need to do to eliminate your weaknesses. If you don&#8217;t record your <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/superfoods">nutrition</a>, chances are you&#8217;ll miss big opportunities to change your <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/liveawesome">diet</a> and lose fat.</li>

<p>So take a deep breath. Ask yourself as you&#8217;re running around to please everyone else, &#8220;Have you set aside time for yourself&#8221;</p>
<p>Be selfish. Make sure you have had some <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">exercise</a> time, some good <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/superfoods">nutrition</a>, and some rest before overextending yourself and doing too much for other people when you haven&#8217;t taken care of yourself and your goals first.</p>
<p><strong>Strategy #4 &#8211; Get on a roll</strong></p>

Long hours of reading, sewing, typing, or standing at a workbench take their toll.</p>
<p>People can take action before it is too late. The best action is regular <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">exercise</a> that stretches the muscles and improves flexibility, with special considerations on the core muscles.</p>
<p>What Are Core Muscles?</p>
<p>Core muscles are to the muscles found at the oblique area, abdominals, lower back, and the gluts. These four areas of the body are the ones that usually frame the posture of a person. A good posture can reflect good conditioning of these muscle areas.</p>
<p>What people do not know is that core muscles are actually the “core” or the central part for all the strength that is needed to boost and carry out different physical activities. This means that if an individual’s core muscles are physically strong, it will maintain equilibrium in the body and stabilize the system every time the person is working out and moving.</p>

<p><strong>Exercising the core muscles with slow, static stretching is just as effective in relieving stiffness and enhances flexibility. Once the flexibility of a person has improved they will be able to perform there physical activities at higher levels.</strong></p>
<p><strong>4. They do not cause sore aching muscles</strong></p>
<p><strong>Static stretching for core muscles is best for the muscles and connective tissues. When you employ slow stretches it is best as opposed to the quick, bouncing exercises that rely on jerky muscle contraction.</strong></p>
<p><strong>5. Lengthen muscles and avoid unbalanced footing as you get old</strong></p>
<p><strong>Core muscle exercises lengthen the muscles that have contracted as a result of pain. It also helps to prevent pain from vigorous <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">exercise</a> if they are included at the end of each workout.</strong></p></blockquote>
