<p>Cardio <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">exercise</a> is such a strange thing. In theory, it should work so perfectly well for all men and women, but as anyone who has tried it knows, the practicality of it just doesn&#8217;t add up.</p>
<p>After all, some men and women do cardio 6 hours, 9 hours, or more per week, and still have belly fat to burn. On the other hand, it works just fine for others.</p>
<p>British researchers wanted to get more insight into this paradox, and studied 35 overweight men and women, who weren&#8217;t previously exercising.</p>
<p>(Reference: International Journal of Obesity 32: 177-184, 2008).</p>
<p>Subjects exercised 5 times per week for 12 weeks. That&#8217;s a lot of <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">exercise</a>, but it helped the subjects lose an average of 8.2 pounds, which is great &#8211; I was positively surprised by the results.</p>
<p>So cardio will work for some people, however, in my experience, it works best in young men, who need the help the least!<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>Back to the study, the variance in <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/keytofatloss">Fat loss</a> between individuals was huge. Check this out&#8230;</p>
<p>The best subject lost a staggering 32.3 pounds in 12 weeks, while the worst subject actually GAINED 3.74 pounds.</p>
<p>The scientists think they know where things went sour. They classified the subjects into 2 groups, called the &#8220;Compensators&#8221; and the &#8220;Non-compensators&#8221;.</p>
<p>The Compensators were hungrier, and as a result consumed an extra 268 calories per day, all but wiping out their cardio efforts.</p>
<p>Therefore, the Compensators lost the least amount of weight, and scientists believe that was due to the huge &#8220;compensatory&#8221; increase in appetite experienced by this group.</p>
<p>Does your appetite increase when you do slow cardio? If it does, research shows it will ruin your cardio efforts.</p>
<p>So if your cardio program is not working for you, check your appetite and calorie intake to see if you are &#8220;compensating&#8221; for your efforts. If you are, you might be better off using a program<br />
of high-intensity resistance and interval <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">training</a> (i.e. Turbulence <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">training</a>) for your weight loss efforts.</p>
<p>As Australian Professor Steve Boucher has shown in research, interval <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">training</a> increases hormones called catecholamine. And increased level of catecholamine can reduce appetite, among other fat-burning benefits.</p>
<p>In the real world, few people lose 33 pounds after 12 weeks of cardio. Heck, few even achieve an average weight loss of 8 pounds with aerobic <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">exercise</a>.</p>
<p>So again, check your appetite, and consider giving high-intensity <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">exercise</a> a go for your next workout program.</p>

<p>Happy New Year! In this article, I&#8217;m going to predict your future and forecast exactly what kind of results you&#8217;re going to get in the next 12 months. Sylvia Browne, step aside&#8230; I&#8217;m pretty good at this.</p>
<p>Several years ago, a public relations firm in New York City asked me to write an article for one of their publications about fitness trends and predictions for the coming year.</p>
<p>It turned out that my &#8220;crystal ball&#8221; was pretty darn accurate. I nailed most of the predictions I made about aerobics classes, yoga, core <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">training</a>, &#8220;holistic&#8221; approaches, online personal <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">training</a> technology, the baby boomer market, increasing obesity and many other subjects.</p>
<p>I do confess, it wasn&#8217;t that difficult, because instead of just guessing, I actually did some research on industry statistics and I also had some &#8220;inside insights&#8221; because I&#8217;d been a health club manager for so many years and was privy to fitness business trends.</p>
<p>This year, instead of making predictions for the whole fitness industry, what if I could take out my crystal ball again and predict with 99% precision exactly what kind of results you will achieve with your body by the end of the year?</p>
<p>Well, no problem, I can do that too!</p>
<p>I would claim that I have some kind of &#8220;gift&#8221; for this, but to be honest, you and I don&#8217;t need to be psychic to make predictions like these.</p>
<p>There are two things you can always count on:</p>
<blockquote><p>(1) Nature&#8217;s laws of cause and effect, and</p>
<p>(2) human nature.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>On that basis, here are my 20 fitness predictions for the New Year:</strong></p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you can reach into your pocket on any day this year and pull out a card or piece of paper with all your body and fitness goals written on it in vivid detail, the odds are 95 to 1 in favor of you achieving every one of those goals before the year is out.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you focus your thoughts on your goals and how you are going to achieve them, all day long, you will reach your goals so fast this year, it will make your head spin.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you focus your thoughts on health woes and body fat problems and if you think about what you don&#8217;t want, all day long, your problems will get worse than ever this year.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you made a new year&#8217;s resolution, but you didn&#8217;t turn it into a specific, written goal with a deadline and a strong reason why you must achieve it, you will freely abandon it the moment the going gets tough.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you can tell me all the reasons why achieving your health and fitness goals are important to you, you will be motivated from within to stick with it when the going gets tough.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that at times, the going is going to get tough.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you can tell me today what is your life purpose and what is your lifelong vision for your body and your health, you will still be as motivated and driven at the end of the year as you were at the beginning.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you don&#8217;t have long term goals and a &#8220;big picture&#8221; vision for your life that you will lose your New Year&#8217;s enthusiasm and motivation in a matter of months or even weeks.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that the way you see yourself in your mind&#8217;s eye today will be an exact reflection of what you see in the mirror at the end of the year.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you have a setback that seems to get in the way of you reaching your health and fitness goals and you tell yourself &#8220;this just is temporary; this too shall pass,&#8221; then it will pass and it won&#8217;t set you back.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you believe the way your body looks today is out of your control and you feel helpless or powerless to change, you won&#8217;t even make much of an effort this year.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you accept complete responsibility for the way your body looks today and you believe that you have the power to change, that you will take action and keep taking action, even through the tough times.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you&#8217;re unhappy with your physical condition and you say, &#8220;it&#8217;s not my fault&#8221; or you blame it on genetics, hormones or age, then your body will look pretty much the same at the end of this year as it did on New Year&#8217;s day.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that the more you have patience, a long term perspective and the ability to postpone immediate gratification, the more likely you are to be a success one year from now.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that the more you seek &#8220;miracle pills&#8221; or &#8220;quick fixes,&#8221; the more likely you are to be a failure one year from now.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that you will be tempted by many quick fixes this year.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you hang out with losers and negative people this year, you will become just like them.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you hang out with winners and positive people this year, you will become just like them.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that you will run into more negative people and losers this year than positive people and winners.</p>
<p>I PREDICT that if you recruit just one friend or support partner that stands behind you and the lifestyle changes you want to make this year, you will double your chances for success. If you surround yourself with numerous support partners, you will become virtually unstoppable.</p>
<p>So how does your future look for the year ahead?</p>
<p>Based on my &#8220;predictions,&#8221; if it doesn&#8217;t look as bright as you&#8217;d like it to be, then don&#8217;t worry, because a prediction is not predestination.</p>
<p>You can&#8217;t do anything to change the past, but by changing your thoughts, attitudes and actions in the present moment, the future is yours to create.</p>

<p>I was at a big event last week and was reminded how important it is to have strategies for this season of high-calorie parties and busy schedules. But I get ticked off by the tired old<br />
suggestions you find on the Internet or in magazines like Woman&#8217;s World.</p>
<p>Often the suggestions are lack any substance, because the writers don&#8217;t want to imply you actually have to make a sacrifice to succeed. They make <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/keytofatloss">Fat loss</a> sound easy, as if all you had to do was park at the far end of the parking lot and you&#8217;d burn all the calories from 5 shortbread cookies.</p>
<p>Well it doesn&#8217;t work that way&#8230;So here are my politically incorrect, unique Turbulence <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/workout">training</a> strategies to help you keep off the holiday pounds.</p>

<p>One of the most common tips you&#8217;ll hear is to &#8220;fill up&#8221; before you go to a party where there will be lots of goodies.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, most people I talk to have no luck with this tip. Most people still go to a party and eat everything in sight.</p>
<p>But recently TT users have told me that having a cup of Green Tea and one ounce of almonds has helped them avoid holiday cravings better than anything ever before.</p>
<p>The fiber from the almonds reduces appetite while the small amount of caffeine from the Green Tea seems to increase mental alertness and keep you &#8220;energized&#8221; at the party.</p>
<p>Hopefully that might work for you&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>Strategy #2 &#8211; Don&#8217;t waste your time on any fancy cardio programs</strong></p>

<P><a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/keytofatloss">Fat loss</a> requires a 90% compliance to <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/liveawesome">healthy eating</a>. Any less and you&#8217;re falling short.<br />
<P>You need to stick with an effective and nutritious plan of eating long enough to gauge change in your body and your general wellbeing.<br />
<P>1 week of being sensible is not enough!<br />

<P>If you&#8217;re carrying substantial levels of body fat then you&#8217;ll be well aware that it didn&#8217;t arrive overnight. Your body fat required months, maybe years of cultivation! It could well take a while to get to where you want to be, physically.<br />

They still have that glass or two of wine in the evening, they eat high sugar snacks during the day and they wonder why they don&#8217;t seem to be making any headway.<br />

6. Eat protein every time you eat &#8211; meat, fish, egg, peanut butter, nuts (in small amounts)<BR><br />

<p>Do you eat when you are bored, upset or angry? Do you find that every day requires a chocolate bar to get you through the afternoon? If you are trying to lose weight, you may feel guilty about snacks. As a weight loss coach, I find some folk (particularly women) laugh nervously when I ask them what happens to their <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/superfoods">food</a> consumption around 4pm. This often is the time of the day when the &#8216;Snack Monster&#8217; takes control of them! Some berate themselves for being weak, out of control and without discipline. They either eventually give up on their <a target="_blank" href="http://www.smartfitnesstips.com/go/liveawesome">diet</a> altogether or develop counter thoughts so they dont feel so bad. &#8216;It didnt really matter &#8211; it is fat free&#8217;. <p>Would you let a million dollars go to waste for a salary of say 30-75 thousand dollars a year?</p>
<p>No you wouldn&#8217;t so invest time into yourself you will feel better, look younger, have more energy and release that creative and productive you.</p>
<p>Your body, mind and spirit are worth way more than a million. Shift the values and put them in prospective.</p>

<p>Set an example for you children, parents, neighbors, cousins, spouse, sisters and brothers. Set the mood and it all starts with you nothing happens if you do nothing.</p>

<p>There is a solution to this hectic lifestyle that can give you the benefits of improved health and get the same amount done in the day.</p>
<p>If the dog needs a walk, then how about taking it for a run instead. You will still be out for the same amount of time but you will be getting increased benefit from running rather than walking.</p>
<p>Or, if you don&#8217;t like running, you can step up the pace of your walk. Not only will you be getting fitter, but your pet will also be healthier.</p>
<p>And if you have to cut the lawn on the weekend then try walking faster with the mower, or if you have a big property step up the pace with the mower. Now that will give you a good workout and you will have more time for relaxation in the time you have saved by mowing the lawn faster.</p>
<p>Try walking to work rather than driving the car or park the car a little further from your office and walk the extra distance.</p>
<p>Go for a walk or run at lunchtime rather than sitting in the lunchroom or your office. Fresh air will heighten your state of well being. Weather is weather it all has its own positives find them and use them.</p>
<p>If you are sitting in an office all day working at a desk try doing leg extensions as you sit there. Even without weight resistance you will still be exercising your legs and you can add weights if you like to get more benefit from these exercises.</p>
<p>Drink water rather than coffee and tea to boost your energy and you might just find the energy to spend a little more time on yourself.</p>
<p>Most people drink coffee for energy. However coffee really hits your adrenals hard and the reverse effect happens after drinking coffee for a period of time.</p>
<p>Avoid the sugary drinks as well. These drinks will give you a feeling of a pick up and then a sudden drop. This is hard on your body and most of the time people are reaching for more of the same to get that heightened energy just to be let down again.</p>
<p>The sugar contained in them will also pack on the weight. It will unmotivate you and pack on the weight. Stay away from them, run away from them.</p>
<p>So I encourage you to find multiple reasons to invest in you, you are the miracle. Stop the struggle and enjoy all the benefits of being fitter and healthier. I believe in you!</p>
